A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.

The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations domestically and internationally.

"The year's tuna brings good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the annual first sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants throughout the country.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for customers at the winner's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," said one satisfied customer.
