European Cup Matches This Evening: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & More

Welcome to another evening of thrilling European Cup soccer. 9 games are planned for tonight, featuring three English clubs in play. The Blues take on Barça in the key fixture of the night, whilst The Magpies travel to Marseille and Manchester City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.

Current Standings

It's the halfway stage of the group stage, meaning the table is taking form. Each of the six English sides are currently in the top 12, but there are only two points between 5th and 16th position, so there's a whiff of volatility about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Historical Context

The only previous meeting between Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semi-final of 2004, claimed by an emerging superstar from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead at Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Even though Newcastle arrived in the south of France coming off their restorative 2-1 home English top-flight victory against Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union SG, Benfica and Bilbao in the European Cup, their only on the road victory since the start of April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Eddie Howe was eager to discuss the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the coach, whose side are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine pts from a possible twelve and automatic qualification to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the MBM version of Maradona is handling for that.
